A gaming laptop lets you play the latest games anywhere, but it’s also one of the easiest tech purchases to get wrong. The same graphics chip can perform very differently depending on cooling and power limits, screens range from excellent to washed-out, and 2026’s memory-chip shortage has pushed prices up across the board. Spending more doesn’t always buy you more frames per second.
We picked seven gaming laptops that Notebookcheck — one of the most thorough laptop testers in Europe — rates highly, from a sub-€1,200 RTX 5060 machine to premium thin-and-light models. Prices are approximate street prices from Notebookcheck’s rankings, checked in October 2026. Configurations vary by country and retailer, so always compare the exact specs before you buy.

1. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 — best overall
The Zephyrus G14 tops Notebookcheck’s gaming laptop ranking with 89.9%, and it’s the one we’d buy if portability matters. Asus fits an Intel Core Ultra 9 386H and an RTX 5070 Ti into a 14-inch, 1.6 kg body with a bright 2880 × 1800 OLED display, so it’s light enough for daily carry yet fast enough for demanding games at high settings.
It’s not cheap — around €3,200–3,300 in Germany — and a small chassis can’t match the sustained power of big 16- and 18-inch machines. If you want the best mix of power and portability, though, nothing beats it right now.
Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (GU405AR)
A compact 14-inch gaming laptop with an RTX 5070 Ti and OLED screen, scored 89.9% by Notebookcheck.
Pros
- Fast single-thread performance
- Excellent keyboard
- SD card reader
- Portable for a gaming machine
Cons
- Pricier than the 2025 model
2. XMG Apex 16 Max — best value high-end
XMG is a German brand that configures laptops to order, and the Apex 16 Max shows why that pays off. Notebookcheck rates it at 87.8%: a Ryzen 9 9955HX and RTX 5070 Ti deliver strong gaming performance, and the 16-inch 2560 × 1600 Mini-LED screen at 300 Hz makes HDR games genuinely enjoyable. Prices start at around €2,099 — roughly €1,000 less than many big-brand laptops with the same GPU.
At about 2.7 kg it’s a desk-bound machine rather than an everyday carry, and it’s sold mainly through XMG and its partner shops.
XMG Apex 16 Max
Notebookcheck rates this German-configured 16-inch machine at 87.8%: RTX 5070 Ti power and a bright 300 Hz Mini-LED screen for much less than the big brands.
Pros
- Strong gaming performance
- Mini-LED makes HDR games enjoyable
- Configurable, German support
Cons
- Heavy at around 2.7 kg
- Not sold everywhere — mainly via XMG/Bestware
3. Asus TUF Gaming A18 — best budget big screen
The TUF Gaming A18 is Notebookcheck’s top pick among gaming laptops under €1,500 (82.4%). You get an RTX 5060, a large 18-inch 144 Hz screen with good colour coverage, a sturdy build and a 90 Wh battery — unusual at this price. Notebookcheck’s best price was about €1,392 in October 2026.
It’s big and heavy at about 2.7 kg, and the 1920 × 1200 resolution looks less crisp on such a large panel. As a desktop replacement for a student room or a living-room setup, it’s excellent value.
Asus TUF Gaming A18 (FA808UM)
Notebookcheck's top budget gaming laptop: an RTX 5060 in a sturdy 18-inch body with a 90 Wh battery.
Pros
- Big 18-inch screen with good colours
- Large 90 Wh battery
- Sturdy build
Cons
- Large and heavy
- 1200p resolution on an 18-inch panel
4. Lenovo LOQ 15 (15AHP11) — best all-round budget
Lenovo’s LOQ 15 pairs an RTX 5060 with a solid chassis, a good keyboard and plenty of ports. Its 15.3-inch screen covers 99.8% of sRGB in Notebookcheck’s measurements — rare in this class, where many budget gaming laptops have dull panels. It scored 81.1% and was around €1,499.
It’s a little pricier than the cheapest RTX 5060 models, and the storage configuration varies between retailers, so check whether you’re getting 512 GB or 1 TB.

A solid 15-inch RTX 5060 laptop with a good keyboard, plenty of ports and an unusually good screen for the class.
Pros
- Solid chassis and good input devices
- Good port selection
- Accurate display (99.8% sRGB per Notebookcheck)
Cons
- Pricier than the cheapest RTX 5060 rivals

5. Acer Nitro V 17 — most GPU for the money
If raw graphics performance per euro is what matters, the Acer Nitro V 17 puts an RTX 5070 in a laptop for about €1,299. Notebookcheck found it quiet and efficient while gaming, and it comes with a 1 TB SSD.
The weak point is the screen: it covers only around 61% of sRGB, so colours look washed out. Many buyers plug it into an external monitor at home — see our best gaming monitors.

An RTX 5070 laptop for around €1,300 that games quietly and efficiently — just don't expect a good screen.

Cons

For around €1,115, the LOQ Essential 15 is one of the cheapest ways to get RTX 5060 performance. Notebookcheck praises its performance and design for the price (78.9%). Lenovo saves money by skipping RGB lighting, G-Sync and Advanced Optimus, and the base model has only a 512 GB SSD — games fill that quickly, so budget for an upgrade.
Lenovo LOQ Essential 15 (15IRX11)
A no-frills RTX 5060 laptop that keeps the price down by skipping extras like RGB, G-Sync and OLED.
Pros
- Low price for RTX 5060 performance

If budget isn’t a concern, the Zephyrus G16 with an RTX 5080 and a 240 Hz OLED is one of the most capable 16-inch laptops you can buy, at around €5,400 as configured by Notebookcheck. It’s very fast and well built, but most players will get better value from the XMG Apex 16 Max or the G14.

A no-compromise 16-inch gaming and creator laptop with an RTX 5080 and a 240 Hz OLED panel.

How to choose a gaming laptop
Start with the GPU tier
An RTX 5050 or 5060 handles 1080p gaming well; an RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti is the sweet spot for high settings at 1440p-class laptop resolutions; RTX 5080 and 5090 are for enthusiasts. Laptop GPUs are slower than desktop cards with the same name, and performance depends heavily on the power limit (TGP) — check reviews for real frame rates.
Check the screen
Budget gaming laptops often cut costs on the display. Look for at least 144 Hz and good colour coverage (close to 100% sRGB). OLED and Mini-LED screens look far better in HDR games but cost more.
RAM and storage
16 GB of RAM is the minimum in 2026; 32 GB helps with streaming and multitasking. Modern games take 100 GB or more each, so 1 TB of storage is a sensible minimum — or choose a model with a free M.2 slot. A portable SSD can also hold your library.
Weight, noise and battery
Big 16- and 18-inch laptops run cooler and quieter but weigh 2.5–3.5 kg. Battery life while gaming is short on every model; expect a few hours of work or video at best.
Buying in Europe
Check the keyboard layout (QWERTZ, AZERTY, UK, Nordic). Configure-to-order brands like XMG let you choose layout, RAM and storage. EU purchases carry a two-year legal guarantee, and online orders can usually be returned within 14 days. If you mainly play at a desk, compare with a gaming PC — it’s often cheaper for the same performance.
How we choose
We don’t benchmark laptops ourselves. Our picks are based on Notebookcheck’s detailed reviews and rankings (updated August and October 2026), combined with European street prices. We list weaknesses as well as strengths. Read more about how we research.
FAQ
Is a gaming laptop worth it over a desktop?
Only if you need portability. A desktop with the same performance is usually cheaper, quieter and easier to upgrade.
Is the RTX 5060 enough for gaming in 2026?
Yes, for 1080p and many games at higher settings. For high refresh rates at higher resolutions, look at RTX 5070 or 5070 Ti models.
How much should I spend?
Around €1,100–1,500 buys a solid RTX 5060/5070 laptop. Premium thin-and-light models with RTX 5070 Ti and OLED screens cost €2,000–3,300.
Can I use a gaming laptop for work and study?
Yes, but they’re heavier and have shorter battery life than normal laptops. If gaming is secondary, see our best laptops guide.
