Best Wi-Fi Routers 2026: FRITZ!Box, Wi-Fi 7 and Mesh Picks for Europe

The best Wi-Fi 7 routers and mesh systems for Europe in 2026, from FRITZ!Box for DSL, cable and fibre to TP-Link Deco, with EU prices.

TechHive EditorialUpdated 7 min read

Slow, patchy Wi-Fi is one of the most common tech frustrations at home — and often the problem isn’t your internet line but the router your provider gave you. In 2026 Wi-Fi 7 routers have become affordable, bringing the new 6 GHz band, much faster speeds close to the router and Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which lets devices use several bands at once for steadier connections.

European homes have a particular twist: in Germany, Austria and several other countries you’re free to use your own modem router, and AVM’s FRITZ!Box family (now branded simply FRITZ!) dominates. This guide is based mainly on PC-WELT’s Wi-Fi 7 router test (updated May 2026) and German price comparisons from October 2026. First, check your connection type — DSL, cable, fibre or none (if your provider supplies a separate modem) — because that decides which router you can use.

1. FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro — best overall

PC-WELT’s test winner is the most versatile FRITZ!Box yet: a modem router that works with both DSL/VDSL and fibre lines, so it keeps working if you upgrade your connection. It supports the full Wi-Fi 7 spec including 6 GHz, where PC-WELT measured more than 2 Gbit/s under optimal conditions, and its USB 3.0 port makes it a capable mini-NAS. Like every FRITZ!Box, it adds a DECT base for cordless phones, mesh support and VPN.

The downsides are a high power draw and, in PC-WELT’s view, a port selection that could use another multi-gig port and USB-C. The UVP is €399; MediaMarkt sold it for about €335–340 in September 2026.

Best overall (DSL & fibre)9.0/10

FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro

2. FRITZ!Box 7690 — best for VDSL

If you have a VDSL line and don’t need 6 GHz, the 7690 is PC-WELT’s pick. It offers about 1.8 Gbit/s on 5 GHz, two 2.5 Gbit Ethernet ports, Multi-Link Operation, a Zigbee radio for smart-home devices and a fast WireGuard VPN (just over 900 Mbit/s in the test). It’s often discounted well below its €379 UVP — around €249–280 in September 2026.

Only USB 2.0 is a weakness if you want to use it as network storage (PC-WELT measured about 46 MB/s).

3. FRITZ!Box 5690 — best for fibre

For fibre connections (FTTH), the plain 5690 is PC-WELT’s best choice. It connects directly to the fibre line without an extra SFP module, offers excellent Wi-Fi speeds at short range and the usual FRITZ! feature set, and has a 2.5 Gbit WAN/LAN port and USB 3.0. Notebookcheck reported an all-time low of €239 (UVP €319). It lacks 6 GHz, and other Wi-Fi 7 routers are faster at long range — consider a mesh repeater for larger homes.

FRITZ!Box 5690 (fibre)

PC-WELT's best fibre router: excellent short-range Wi-Fi, no extra SFP module needed and a full FRITZ! feature set for a fair price.

4. FRITZ!Box 6670 Cable — best for cable internet

Cable customers (Vodafone in Germany, for example) can use the 6670 Cable, PC-WELT’s best cable modem router. It’s a good-value mid-range model with Wi-Fi 7 multi-link operation, about 1.5 Gbit/s on 5 GHz, four Gigabit ports plus one 2.5 Gbit port and Zigbee. It was €239–255 in September 2026 (UVP €329). As with the 7690, the USB port is only 2.0.

5. TP-Link Deco BE85 — fastest mesh system

For large houses, or if you have multi-gigabit internet, PC-WELT’s best mesh system is the Deco BE85. Its 6 GHz backhaul between units exceeded 7 Gbit/s in the test (over 8 Gbit/s over cable), and every unit has two 10 Gbit and two 2.5 Gbit ports. The fan stays quiet.

It’s expensive — a two-pack started at about €730 in October 2026 — setup requires the app and a TP-Link account, and advanced security and parental controls need a subscription of around €40 a year. Note that Deco is a router, not a modem: you’ll still need your provider’s modem or a FRITZ!Box in modem mode.

6. TP-Link Deco BE25 — best value mesh

PC-WELT’s price-performance winner among mesh systems delivers strong speeds for typical internet lines at a low price: a two-pack started at about €180 in October 2026. It skips the 6 GHz band, so it won’t reach Wi-Fi 7’s top speeds, but for flats and houses with internet up to about 1 Gbit/s that rarely matters. Like the BE85, it needs a separate modem.

7. Asus RT-BE92U — best standalone router

Enthusiasts who want full Wi-Fi 7 including 6 GHz, a 10 Gbit LAN port and extensive VPN features at a fair price should look at the Asus RT-BE92U, PC-WELT’s price-performance router at around €270. Range is weaker than the best routers, and the menu is powerful but complex — not ideal for beginners.

How to choose a Wi-Fi router

Start with your connection type

A modem router must match your line: DSL/VDSL, cable (DOCSIS) or fibre. The FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro covers DSL and fibre; the 7690 is DSL only; the 5690 is fibre only; the 6670 Cable is for cable. Mesh systems and standalone routers like Deco and Asus need a separate modem. In Germany and some other EU countries, “Routerfreiheit” (router freedom) lets you use your own device — ask your provider for the access data.

Do you need Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz?

The 6 GHz band gives the highest speeds and least interference, but it has shorter range and only newer devices support it (recent phones, laptops and tablets). If your internet is under 1 Gbit/s, a Wi-Fi 7 router without 6 GHz is usually plenty.

Mesh for bigger homes

Thick walls and several floors weaken Wi-Fi. Mesh systems use multiple units that hand your devices between them. FRITZ!Box owners can add FRITZ! repeaters; TP-Link and Asus sell complete mesh kits.

Ports, phones and smart home

Check for 2.5 Gbit or 10 Gbit Ethernet if you have fast internet or a NAS. FRITZ!Boxes also handle landline phones (DECT and analogue) and, on newer models, Zigbee smart-home devices — useful if you’d otherwise need a separate hub.

Power use and updates

A router runs 24/7, so power draw adds up; PC-WELT flags high consumption on several Wi-Fi 7 models. Choose a brand with a strong update record — security updates matter more for a router than almost any other device.

How we choose

We don’t run our own Wi-Fi lab. Our picks follow PC-WELT’s Wi-Fi 7 router tests and German price data from MediaMarkt, Notebookcheck and geizhals, and we list each router’s weaknesses. Read more about how we research.

FAQ

Which FRITZ!Box should I buy?

For DSL and future fibre: the 5690 Pro. For VDSL only: the 7690. For fibre: the 5690. For cable: the 6670 Cable.

Will a new router make my internet faster?

It won’t increase the speed of your contract, but it can make much more of it reach your devices — especially in rooms far from the router.

Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it in 2026?

If you’re buying a new router anyway, yes — prices have dropped and features like Multi-Link Operation improve stability. Don’t replace a good Wi-Fi 6 router just for Wi-Fi 7 if you’re happy with it.

Can I use a FRITZ!Box outside Germany?

FRITZ!Boxes are sold across Europe, but DSL and cable compatibility depends on your provider and country. Check with your provider before buying a modem router; a mesh system with your provider’s modem is the safe alternative.
