A soundbar is the single biggest improvement you can make to a TV’s sound, especially for speech. You don’t need to spend a fortune: under €300 you can get Dolby Atmos decoding, HDMI eARC, a separate subwoofer or even a full 5.1.2 speaker package. What you won’t get is everything at once — so it’s about choosing the right compromise for your room.
This guide is based on netzwelt’s April 2026 test of 14 soundbars, What Hi-Fi’s 2026 Awards and current European prices. Note that several popular models hover right around the €300 mark, so we flag where you’ll need a deal to stay under budget.

1. Sonos Ray — best for clear speech and streaming
The Sonos Ray costs €299 and is the most polished bar at this price. Speech is very clear, it’s compact enough for smaller TVs, and it joins a Sonos multi-room system for music. The big limitation: it connects by optical cable only, so there’s no HDMI and no Dolby Atmos, and the highs can sound forward on music.
If you already own Sonos speakers or mostly want better dialogue, it’s the one to get. More options above €300 are in our best soundbars guide.

Pros

Cons

2. Denon DHT-S218 — best value with HDMI eARC
Denon’s DHT-S218 delivers the features the Ray lacks: HDMI eARC, so your TV remote controls the volume, and Dolby Atmos decoding. Two built-in subwoofer drivers fire downwards for fuller bass, and at 67 mm tall it fits under most TVs. There’s a dialogue enhancer and a Pure mode for music.
Its list price is €269, and it has dropped as low as €159 in past sales. There’s no true surround or height effect — the speakers fire forwards — and no Wi-Fi streaming.

A compact Dolby Atmos bar with HDMI eARC and built-in subwoofers — a clear upgrade over TV speakers that fits under most TVs.

3. Hisense AX5125H — best surround package (if you catch a deal)
What Hi-Fi calls the AX5125H the best budget soundbar system: a 5.1.2 package with a subwoofer and rear speakers, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, and HDMI eARC. Nothing else at this price gives you real surround. It was €326 on Amazon.de in August 2026, so you’ll need a sale to get it under €300.
The subwoofer can be overzealous and voices can sound muffled until you adjust the settings.
Hisense AX5125H
What Hi-Fi's best budget package: a full 5.1.2 system with rear speakers and subwoofer for little more than a basic soundbar.
- Channels
- 5.1.2 (bar, sub, rears)
- Connection
- HDMI eARC
- Formats
- Dolby Atmos, DTS:X
Pros
- Real rear speakers and sub at a budget price
- Atmos and DTS:X support
- Big, cinematic scale
Cons
- Subwoofer can be overzealous
- Voices can sound a little muffled
4. Sharp HT-SBW320 — slimmest
At just 3.6 cm tall, the Sharp HT-SBW320 fits under TVs with very short feet, and it comes with a separate subwoofer for €199. netzwelt rated it 2.6, noting a clear improvement over TV speakers despite the minimal footprint. The subwoofer isn’t quite as refined as the bar, and setup via the remote and small display is clunky.
Sharp HT-SBW320

5. Creative Stage Pro — best for small spaces
For a bedroom TV or a desk monitor, the 55 cm Creative Stage Pro with a wired subwoofer costs about €110. It’s very compact and cheap, but at 8 cm tall it may block the bottom of the screen, it can’t be wall-mounted and has only two speakers. netzwelt rated it 3.0.

6. Amazon Fire TV Soundbar — simplest
At about €140, Amazon’s own bar is flat, simple and pairs easily with Fire TV devices. It improves speech over TV speakers, but netzwelt gave it the lowest score in its test (3.2), with little bass. Only buy it if simplicity is the priority.
Amazon Fire TV Soundbar

Pros
- Simple setup

Worth stretching for: just over €300
Two bars just above the line are worth a look on sale. The JBL Bar 300MK2 (about €330 in netzwelt’s test, grade 2.0) needs no subwoofer and sounds warm and full with clear speech. The Sony HT-S2000 is a 3.1-channel Dolby Atmos/DTS:X bar with a centre speaker for dialogue; we saw it for about €321 at a Saturn marketplace seller in October 2026.

How to choose a soundbar under €300
HDMI eARC vs optical
HDMI ARC/eARC lets your TV remote control the soundbar and carries Dolby Atmos. Optical-only bars (like the Sonos Ray) work with any TV but can’t play Atmos and sometimes need a separate remote setup. Check your TV has an HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC.
Subwoofer or all-in-one?
A separate subwoofer adds real bass for films but needs floor space and a socket. All-in-one bars are tidier and fine for speech and TV shows.
Size and height
Measure the gap between your TV stand and the bottom of the screen — tall bars can block the picture or the TV’s IR sensor. The Sharp (3.6 cm) and Denon (6.7 cm) are the safest bets.
Don’t expect real Atmos at this price
Many budget bars decode Dolby Atmos but have no upward-firing speakers, so the height effect is virtual. For genuine surround, a package like the Hisense AX5125H is the only option near €300.
Buying in Europe
Soundbars are discounted heavily in November, and EU buyers have a two-year legal guarantee and 14 days to return online orders. If your TV is new, pair it with our best TVs under €1,000 picks.
How we choose
We don’t run our own lab tests. Our picks combine published reviews and measurements from established outlets — netzwelt and What Hi-Fi for this guide — with current European prices, and we always list each product’s weaknesses as well as its strengths. Read more about how we research.
FAQ
Is a cheap soundbar better than TV speakers?
Almost always. Even the cheapest bars in netzwelt’s test improved clarity and bass compared with built-in TV speakers.
Do I need Dolby Atmos?
Not for TV and news. For films it’s nice, but under €300 the effect is usually virtual unless you buy a speaker package.
Which soundbar is best for dialogue?
The Sonos Ray and the Denon DHT-S218 (with its dialogue enhancer) are the clearest for speech.
Can I add a subwoofer later?
Only with some brands. Sonos lets you add a Sub to the Ray, but at extra cost; most budget bars can’t be expanded.
