Smart speakers are going through their biggest change in a decade. Amazon, Google and Apple are all moving their voice assistants to generative AI – Alexa+, Gemini and a new Siri – but in Europe the rollout is patchy and some of the smartest features now sit behind subscriptions. That makes choosing a speaker less about the assistant’s promises and more about three practical questions: which ecosystem you already use, how good the speaker sounds, and whether it can run your smart home.
Here are the smart speakers worth buying in October 2026, based on reviews from T3, hifi.de, mobiflip, IT Daily and Macwelt, with European prices.

1. Amazon Echo Studio (2025) — best-sounding Alexa speaker
The first new Echo Studio in six years is Amazon’s best-sounding speaker: three full-range drivers plus a woofer, Dolby Atmos and automatic room correction. It’s also a complete smart-home hub with Matter, Thread and Zigbee built in, plus Wi-Fi 6E, and Amazon’s new A3Z Pro chip speeds up voice recognition.
There are no wired audio inputs, and Alexa+ – Amazon’s paid AI upgrade – has been slow to reach European countries, so check what’s available where you live. The list price is €239.99; Geizhals showed it from about €224 in late October 2026.

2. Amazon Echo Dot Max — best compact Alexa speaker
The Dot Max is a bigger-sounding Echo Dot: German site mobiflip found clearly more volume and bass than the regular Dot, and hifi.de scored it 8.3 for strong sound in small and medium rooms, very good voice recognition and plenty of smart-home features (Matter, Thread and an optional Eero Wi-Fi extender).
The catch is price. It launched at €109.99 – roughly double an older Dot – and it has no clock display. Echo devices are discounted often (hifi.de spotted it at €74.99), so wait for a deal.

3. Google Home Speaker — best for Google and Gemini
Google’s first speaker built around Gemini arrived in Germany in August 2026 for €119.99. IT Daily found conversations with Gemini natural and smooth, and the hardware solid: a 58 mm driver with 360-degree sound and better bass than the Nest Mini, a Matter hub, Thread router, Wi-Fi 6 and a physical microphone switch. Pair two for stereo, or combine them with the Google TV Streamer for a simple wireless surround setup.
The downsides are real, though. Gemini Live (free-flowing conversation) requires Google Home Premium at €10 a month after a six-month trial, the reviewer found Gemini still occasionally fails at basic smart-home commands, and the power cable is fixed.

4. Sonos Era 300 — best premium smart speaker
If sound matters most, the Sonos Era 300 is in another league from the Echo and Google speakers. T3 calls its sound top-level, it plays Dolby Atmos music with real height, and it slots into a Sonos multi-room system or a home cinema with a Sonos soundbar (see our soundbar guide). hifi.de rated it 8.7.
It works with Alexa or Sonos’s own voice control – not Google Assistant – and the hourglass shape divides opinion. The list price is €499, with deals around €399–430.

5. Apple HomePod mini (2nd gen) — best for iPhone households
Apple announced the second-generation HomePod mini in October 2026 with a much faster S10 chip, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6 and – new – the ability to use up to four HomePods as surround speakers with an Apple TV. It remains a capable Home hub for Apple’s smart-home platform.
Macwelt points out two catches: the price rose to €169 (about 50% more than the first model) and the new, smarter Siri isn’t available in the EU yet. Pre-orders are open with shipping from 30 November 2026. If you can still find the first-generation mini cheaply, it’s a sensible alternative.

6. Apple HomePod (2nd gen) — best full-size Apple speaker
T3’s best full-size Apple speaker offers excellent, room-filling audio, stereo pairing and Home and Matter hub features. It’s only sensible if you’re fully in Apple’s world – there’s no Spotify voice control and Android users can’t set it up – and it’s pricey for a single speaker. Check the current offer.

How to choose a smart speaker
Pick your ecosystem first
Alexa has the widest smart-home device support and the cheapest hardware. Google’s Gemini is the most conversational but pushes a subscription. Siri works best if everyone in the home uses an iPhone. Mixing ecosystems is possible thanks to Matter, but voice control is smoothest when you stick to one.
AI assistants and subscriptions in Europe
Alexa+, Gemini Live and Apple’s new Siri all launched in the US first, and EU availability lags. Base voice features stay free, but the most advanced ones increasingly need a monthly fee. Buy for the hardware and the features available in your country today.
Sound quality
Small speakers (Dot Max, Google Home Speaker, HomePod mini) are fine for radio, podcasts and kitchen music. For proper music listening, step up to the Echo Studio, HomePod or Sonos Era 300 – or pair a speaker with a set of bookshelf speakers.
Smart-home hub features
Look for Matter and Thread support if you want to control lights, plugs and sensors from different brands. The Echo Studio adds Zigbee too, which covers many older devices.
Privacy
All of these have microphone-mute controls; the Google Home Speaker has a physical switch. Check the privacy settings in each app and delete voice recordings regularly if you prefer.

FAQ
Which smart speaker has the best sound?
Of the ones here, the Sonos Era 300, followed by the Apple HomePod and the Echo Studio (2025).
Do I need a subscription for Gemini or Alexa+?
Basic voice control is free. Google’s Gemini Live needs Home Premium (from €10/month), and Amazon’s Alexa+ is a paid upgrade where available – check your country.
Is the new Siri available on the HomePod mini 2 in Europe?
Not at launch, according to Macwelt – EU buyers get the existing Siri for now.
